thewordthruthenet.org: SEEK DAILY (NBC) Thursday, July 18 Matthew 6:16-18 FASTING DIRECTED TO GOD “But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face.” Matthew 6:17, NIV Jesus’ teaching in this text was a warning against religious showmanship and hypocrisy. Jesus warns that when we do things for the purpose of receiving the praise of men, like letting everyone know when we are fasting through our appearance, we lose our reward from God. Fasting directed to God should be to discipline our bodies and draw us closer to God, and not to receive the applause of men. Fasting directed to God brings humility, because going without food is a way of reminding us of our complete dependence on God and His Word. Fasting directed to God is not an avenue to go into hunger strike, but an experience of God’s awesome presence. Fasting directed to God should be backed up with fervent prayer and a worship experience, if not it is a sure waste of time and a mere decision to avoid food. Be careful not to allow your fasting attract men’s approval and applause; rather, let it gain divine approval and there after you will be counting your blessings from God. Pray Point: Pray that you will not fast to get man’s applause but to truly seek God’s face. Read Bible Through Passage: Neh. 15; Acts 17 ***********************
