"they buried us without shroud or coffin and in August" (after Seamus Heaney) they rush to clear the shelves of the community bookstore all the title listed under "H" had been taken, so I asked the lady standing near to allow me to review the last two, the last two copies that were left; the last two lines I remember at Hunter College or the Ireland House, but the shelves were cleared of all remnant; the way we reappear from your lorry, the way story will be placed in the New York Times, in the obituary section and maybe the academy will do a tribute, but this is not the same revelatory or scripted biography; the book capturing another famous life; the shelves had been cleared left to rest in place of many names and DIckinson used numbers the way Shakespeare used his sonnets the way we forget that he is Irish and I only speak English; and the way we forget after the shelf has been cleared; and the family has taken all the food, the longevity has the potential of sustaining; and I did not come to pay respect the way of window-sills and shelves at school, but we were warned of this; asked to dust the boards and then sit and wait for the inevitable, for the perpetual and listen to rain spit into new ashes, for we are asked to be able to see before sight and live before life and not show and tell, but there are loads of dust and lots of ashes to remain here, and I wonder if I am good enough to even question or relate to a life of letters, if my take is any better than the dream boat coalman, but this is left to the critic, the place of review ; so I retreat because I do not read enough, or if I did not study, but if there is not a return then why is the passport green and the return back to the old country, to the place of imagination; so the artificial will cease, if the course is anointed by voice and muse; only if I arrived to those shelves before goose wings had taken them left for dream in this void; the clearing of shelf left only another glory; another story to create from threadbare necessity; only left the rest to wait.
