this affects every motorcyclist..... I wrote my Florida senator Marco Rubio because I dont agree with our federal government paying for motorcycle ONLY checkpoints. Not only do we have to deal with automobile checkpoints but we have our own checkpoint to deal with. Its pure Discrimination. Only four states have outlawed this practice. If you feel the way I do please write your congressman. It took some months to get a response but this is it... Dear Mr. Youngclaus, Thank you for contacting me with regard to motorcycle checkpoints. I appreciate hearing from you. As you may know, motorcycle only checkpoints are used by law enforcement to stop passing motorcyclists while they check for compliance with state laws covering license endorsement, helmet use, and exhaust systems, among other things. On March 5, 2014, Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) introduced the Stop Motorcycle Checkpoint Funding Act (S. 2078), which was referred to the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation. This legislation would prohibit the Secretary of Transportation from providing funds to states, localities, and Indian tribes for any program which checks motorcycle helmet use or creates motorcycle checkpoints that specifically target motorcycle operators or motorcycle passengers. Floridas weather, recreational parks and beaches, and scenic highways make our state ideal for motorcyclists. As a result, we must ensure that motorcycle enthusiasts enjoy a safe environment and that state and local governments work together to reduce motorcycle crashes, injuries and fatalities. These efforts must focus on achievable steps that promote safety, utilize taxpayer funds in an effective manner, and make roads safer for all drivers, not just motorcycle operators. As a member of the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, I will thoroughly review the bill and take your views into consideration. Thank you again for contacting me. It is an honor and a privilege to serve the people of Florida in the United States Senate. Sincerely, Marco Rubio United States Senator
