this is about the mass hysteria of ALS ice bucket challenge: ALS: amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a disease involving the pathways from which the nerve impulses travel to the muscles. there is atrophy of the pathways & the muscles. definitely it is a debilitating disease & makes the life of the patient hell. the ALS ice bucket challenge was invented as a strategy to motivate people for the help of patients suffering from this disease. the idea was well taken by the people & they started contributing for the noble cause, which undoubtedly is a very good thing. As always, our dear bollywood stole this idea from the west & started making it a trend, without knowing its significance at all. I dont blame those illiterate bodybuilders & pretty dumb ladies. but the way indian people are reacting to it is ridiculous! Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: is a relatively rare disease in indian scenario. honestly I havent seen any patient suffering from ALS in medicine/neurolgy wards of AMCH, SPMC or NEIGRIHMS till date.i didnt even know that this disease exists at all until last year when I was preparing for my PG entrance and the only significance of this disease was that AIIMS PG entrance asks some 1-2 questions on it, to rag the candidates. thats ALL!!! our community has many diseases that are far more common than this UFO disease, some of them are: diarrhea, pneumonia, malnutrition, leukemias, worm infestations, encephalitis, meningitis, psychiatric disorders, cancers, HIV-AIDS, urinary infections, cardiac diseases, congenital malformations etc. etc. that cause a huge number of morbidities & mortality in india. frankly speaking: the total number of deaths from diarrhea in last one year in india will definitely be more than the total number of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis cases diagnosed in india!!! and you want to WASTE a FULL BUCKET of ice for this cause??? WASTING A FULL BUCKET OF WATER IS A SHEER NONSENSE!! these are the same people who tend to criticize government for poor water & electricity supply. Dear Fellow Indians, remember: for you it may be a funny thing to waste a full bucket of water, but someday go and ask that 10-12 years old girl of rajasthan, who has to go 3 -4 kilometers in search of only ONE BUCKET OF DRINKING WATER IN 5O DEGREES TEMPERATURE!!! Get some brains my friends!! Dont be nuts!! it is pure marketing & easy publicity!! afterall a half naked wet woman will always be more attractive to our indian audience than a fully naked dehydrated 5 year old!!! Hope that someday, bollywood understands the perspective of Doctors! if you like it & agree to it, please share to help india get rid of this mass hysteria!
