this is the original modern lovers lp that all them critics and historians keep putting in their top ten records of all time list. ten years after its initial release, it had sold less than 3,000 copies. but, it still managed to launch a thousand ships. it was originally recorded by the boston area band in 1974 (or earlier). it wasnt released until 1976, when it stiffed. by that time the modern lovers had broken up and the re-formed as jonathan richman and the modern lovers (a key name difference). the new band was an entire new line-up and a sound totally under richmans control. their subsequent recordings were dramatically different. to make matters worse, both the original modern lovers lp (shown here) and the debut jonathan richman and the modern lovers lp were released on berserkly records. so, the jonathan richman lp came out BEFORE the modern lovers lp - on the same label. totally crazy. if you are shopping for a classic desert island rock and roll lp - go find this original version (not the reissues which have added songs from other sessions). the line up initially included jonathan richman, jerry harrison (later of talking heads) and dave robinson (later the drummer in the cars.) the bassist went on to a great band, too. but i forget which one.
