this song has been my anthem for being an atheist since i was 14 years old, at an age where i was already in the grip of serious doubts about my beliefs. my mother had dumped me into catholicism, though only from a sense of duty to her own upbringing, so i honestly had no sense of clinging to any particular belief...all i had were unanswered questions, a myriad of choices that a 14-yo is ill-equipped to understand, and beneath it all a desire to simply walk my own path and do no harm, which is my central tenet to this day. but at 14 years old, my choosing not to decide seemed like a sin by the definitions of the religions and opinions to which i had been exposed by then. but this song...bloody hell, this miraculous song not only summed up everything i felt and feared and questioned, but gave a voice to my choosing not to decide and, moreover, validated my final choice to walk the path of free will. for that reason, i fell in love with rush and their lyrics for speaking to me when, arguably, i needed it the most.
