timeline and evolution of Lionel Messis career: 2000 - Moved to Barcelona aged 13 2003 - Made his debut as a professional 2005-2008 - Brought up by and played in the first team under Frank Rijkaard, where he played almost exclusively as a winger and established himself as one of the biggest talents in world football. 2008-2009 - Became the best player in the world playing as a winger with Guardiolas arrival as Barca manager, helping lead the club to a historic treble. 2009-2011 - Was moved into a more central position by Guardiola which made him a focal point of the team and improved his goalscoring numbers whilst maintaining his status as the best player in the world. 2011-2013 - Became a lethal goalscorer as a false 9 to go with everything else he offers to the team and continued to dominate world football, under both Guardiola and Vilanova. 2013-present - Doesnt score as much as hes used to in recent years, but has made a transition into becoming more of an attacking midfielder under Martino, using all his creative abilities, vision, and great team play to set up others for goals whilst maintaining his explosiveness in front of goal whenever needed. Still looking like the best in the business even with this change. No matter where you put Messi, whether its on the wing, as a centerforward, as a false 9, or as an attacking midfielder, he has proven that he can adapt his skills to remain at a high level and maintain his brilliant form as the best player in the world. Only special players like Johan Cruyff, Pele, Diego Maradona, and Alfredo Di Stefano have been able to make these kind of re-inventions and positional changes and still remain quality players which is makes them so great, but now there is another player to join the list of legends amongst them who could probably one day even surpass them all....
