The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Gujarat, has said that no rain is expected in the state this week as there is no sign of any of the weather systems that cause rainfall in the state. The state is staring at massive water scarcity as rain deficiency here is currently at 88%. The deficiency in Gujarat region is at 92% while Saurashtra and Kutch regions are 82% deficient rainfall. Officials of the IMD, Gujarat, said that Gujarat state normally has an average precipitation of 159.4 mm till July 7 but this year it has received only 19.4 mm rainfall. Ahmedabad city is yet to open its rain account for the year as there has not been a single shower of monsoon rainfall this season. The monsoon made late entry in south Gujarat but it halted there and did not progress to Gujarat region of the state. Saurashtra got rainfall under the influence of the off-shore trough active over the Arabian Sea. Ahmedabad has also one of the states hottest cities where temperatures hovered around 40 degrees. On Monday, it was recorded at 39.7 degrees Celsius, five degrees above normal for this time of the year. “Currently, there is no system visible which can promise any rain to the state. We are not expecting any rains till the weekend,” said senior meteorologist Manorama Mohanty. Weather officials said that there are three systems which generally bring rain to Gujarat— the off-shore trough in the Arabian Sea, westerly north-westerly movement over Bay of Bengal and ‘mid-tropospheric cyclones’. None are in sight right now. Officials said that there is a hope that the monsoon might revive in central India. But even if this were to happen, Gujarat re gion is not expected to get any windfall precipitation. There might be some light rain in south Gujarat and coastal Saurashtra. Highly-placed officials in New Delhi said that not only Gujarat, the delay in rains has become a cause of concern all over India. “Not only this week, there is little sign of any rain in the next week as well,” an official said. Officials in the relief department said that July is a turnaround month for monsoon. “If the monsoon revives in the month of July, it would be a lifesaver. Otherwise, situation may become grim,” the official said.
