to the person who stole my car on tuesday afternoon from in front of my house: you must have seen it parked from a distance, sparkling in the sunlight as the avalon often does, and somewhere inside of you, you must have known that the the 1997 luxury vehicle with its champagne colored exterior was my only/favorite mode of transportation. the car was mostly likely unlocked and this probably made you feel happy that you didnt have to break any glass with your fist to get inside. i imagine you making your getaway before adjusting the seat, and i picture your disappointment when you looked in the console, and all you found were cassette tapes. maybe you turned on the radio, or maybe you stuck footloose in the tape deck just to see if it would work, and by now you know that it does. as you took a right onto MLK, you were probably looking around the car and noticing the random toys on the floor and the dirty carpet and the mug in the holder with tea still in it. you were probably impressed by the cars sunroof and leather interior and i imagine you rolled the windows down as you drove away from my house, and felt cool in my champagne ride. but now, as you are rolling around the streets of portland, feeling awesome about your self because your car is luxury, i am here to tell you that the avalon was passed down from father Bill Beery to daughter Erin Beery and then to me and you actually werent in the plan of people who were EVER supposed to drive this car. but since you took it without asking, and since i may never get it back, i will tell you that the glovebox is jammed, that there is water that sloshes around in the rear passenger door, that the trunk has to be opened with a key and that the tape deck sometimes gets jammed; the sunroof gets stuck when you close it and you have to unlock the car from the passenger side. my red mexican blanket is still in the trunk, along with a paul simon cassette tape that my kids and i listened to all summer, when we drove the avalon down portland streets with the windows down. Im sorry to say, but i dont think you will ever make it to graceland.
