today as i sat working at my desk, my boys, rusty and cooper, started to get a bit restless and bored, pacing back and forth, giving me that mom, stop working look (breaks your heart). so, i decided they needed a little engagement. i pulled myself away from my computer, and proceeded to ask them to go to their beds, then stay a few seconds, then come to me and touch my hand. all this culminating in a yummy treat, and fabulous kisses and pets. then we moved on to a game of come find me, where i ask them to go to their beds, give me a nice stay, then after i have run off and found a good hiding spot, i yell okay, come find me, and when they did, it was celebration time (yes, basically hide-n-seek). we played these games for 15 minutes or so, then back to work i went. but now, my boys are relaxing peacefully next to me. not only did they have a great time playing, and bonding, but we reinforced their bed, stay, down, touch and recall skills. not bad for a 15 minute work break. we are all very busy, but take the time to pull yourself away from your busy life, and give it to your dog(s). happy, well-trained dogs will be your reward!
