today in history. Lukwago, Odonga Charged and Sent To Jail The two opposition politicians, who were this morning arrested for planning to hold a public rally at the Constitutional Square, have been charged with assault and obstructing a police officer on duty. The Aruu County Member of Parliament Odonga Otto and his Kampala Central colleague Elias Lukwago were arrested shortly after they arrived at the Kampala Central Police Station to find out if their rally was sanctioned by police. On Wednesday the MPs announced plans to hold a rally to protest against the mysterious iKiboko Squadi that was deployed to quell a demonstration on Tuesday. But the state minister for internal affairs, Matia Kasaija, advised the group to hold their rally either at Kololo Airstrip or in Nakivubo Stadium. The MPs however defied the advice and moved towards the Central police station from where they were picked and bundled up on a police pick up. The duo were detained briefly at the Central police station and later transferred to the Criminal Investigations Department headquarters in Kampala, where they were asked to record a statement. According to police spokesperson, Asan Kasingye, the two MPs were taken to Buganda road court shortly before 5:00 oclock. Appearing before the Buganda Road courts Grade 1 Magistrate, Stella Amabirisi, the two MPs were charged with assault and obstructing a police officer on duty. Court heard that Odonga Otto assaulted a policeman on duty while Lukwago was accused of committing a traffic offence by driving past a cordoned off area and driving on the pavement. The two however denied the charges and were released on a cash bail of 100,000 shillings each. But their release was short-lived because the banks were closed and they could not pay bail money. They were taken to jail in Luzira where they will spend their weekend. Medard Lubega riots
