translation MATEUSZ BOROWSKI and MAŁGORZATA SUGIERA set designer, arrangement of music and directed by BARBARA WYSOCKA video LEA MATTAUSCH lighting designer JUSTYNA ŁAGOWSKA director’s assistant ADAM SZCZYSZCZAJ CAST ADAM CYWKA RAFAŁ KRONENBERGER ADAM SZCZYSZCZAJ Volokolamsk Highway chronicles the dramatic history of twentieth-century Germany seen through the prism of people’s lives. It begins during the battle of Moscow and traces the story of a deserter from the German army who is shot for treason. The action then switches to the Stalin era, playing out among Stasi agents in the bleak days of Communist East Germany, and then to 1968 to focus on a young generation of Germans who rebel against a reality degraded by their fathers and grandfathers. Heiner Müller is the most celebrated, after Bertolt Brecht, twentieth-century German playwright, harshly critical of his country, but striking a balance between scathing indictment and sympathetic understanding. In the unconventional space of the Świebodzki Train Station Stage, the play’s director, Barbara Wysocka, presents an extremely poignant, modern piece that engages audiences through dramatic text, multimedia and bravura acting. licensed from Authors’ and Composers’ Society ZAiKS, Warsaw, and Panga Pank, Cracow teatrpolski.wroc.pl/en/productions/volokolamsk-highway
