#tristatewx April 14, 2014: In Todays episode of As The Seasons Turn we find winter has abruptly returned after a bitter fight with her mother-in-law spring. The episode opens with a cloudy and dreary scene. :) Well, we knew it was going to happen. At least you had a nice weekend. Right? Many of you experienced heavy squalls over night. Wind gusts in the 30-40 mph range with near zero visibility in heavy downpours. The heaviest line of storms pushed across far southern Illinois and most of western Kentucky. Rainfall totals ranged from less than 0.50 over areas that missed out on the squall line to over 2 in areas that ended up with the most intense storms. I picked up 1.98 here at the Weather Observatory in Massac County, Illinois. Much of that fell in a one hour period. A second area of low pressure will move up along the cold front today (the cold front is located over our local area). As this area of low pressure moves up along the front we will see rain and thunderstorms redevelop late this morning into the afternoon hours. The rain will come to an end later this evening/tonight. I cant rule out a novelty snowflake at the end of the storm. Nothing more than that. I see some snowflakes are falling in Oklahoma at the time of this writing. If nothing else it just speaks to the fact that cold air is returning. The snow itself isnt a big deal. The next question of concern is whether or not our region experiences a frost or freeze tonight and tomorrow night. There are pros and cons that argue for and against this happening. Winds will be strong tonight - that should help keep frost in check. Areas where the wind is blocked could see patchy frost. Temperatures could fall into the upper 20s over the area. Lower 30s are certain. Ground temperatures are warm - moisture also can keep frost from forming. Those are the negating factors for frost forming (tonight). Tuesday night the winds will die down. This will allow for a better chance of frost. Lows on Tuesday night could also fall into the upper 20s. Freeze conditions will obviously be possible. I believe temperatures will be below 32 degrees for a longer period of time on Tuesday night vs tonight. Bottom line - frost/freeze conditions are possible tonight and Tuesday night. If you have sensitive plants then you will want to protect them. Lets hope this is our last dance with the 32 degree line. No promises. Forecast details... Today - Mostly cloudy and cool - raw. Showers and a few thunderstorms redeveloping. Temperatures will fall into the 40s. Northwest winds at 10-15 mph. Below normal temperatures. Tonight - Cloudy with evening showers. A stray snow flurry not completely out of the question. Clearing late. Total lunar eclipse 12:58 am to 4:33 am. Turning sharply colder. Overnight lows in the upper 20s and lower 30s. Northwest winds at 10-20 mph. Winds will be gusty at times. Below normal temperatures. Tuesday - Mostly sunny. Cool. Highs in the middle to upper 40s. Northwest winds at 10-15 mph. Below normal temperatures. Tuesday night - Mostly clear. Cold. Frost/freeze conditions likely. Overnight lows in the upper 20s and lower 30s. Northwest winds at 5-10 mph becoming calm. Below normal temperatures. Wednesday - Mix of sun and clouds. Not quite as cold. Highs in the 50s. Southeast winds at 10-15 mph with gusts above 20 mph. Below normal temperatures.
