two things that stand out about China. There is a difference between regulation and meddling. They do not meddle in China--in fact they discourage folks from depending on the Government. And they regulate very little with the result that all standards are appalling--construction and building codes are nearly non-existent, waste disposal, food security, food production, health care, traffic codes, academic standards, retail banking. It is very smelly, the place is falling down, food poisoning is always a clear and present danger, university cheating is rampant, crappy merchandise is the norm, shitty accommodations are the rule--but cops do not bust down your door and shoot you nor do they chase you through the streets or shoot your dogs for grins. And tea, Almost no one drinks the stuff.
