ulele In addition to irritating people on this site, I also do volunteer work. This last Saturday 50 or so Tampa residents met at the new Gonzmart Restaurant (ulele) to hear our instructions for planting 4000 plants. The fresh water springs located at the park had been capped off in the 1940s. As part of the new Riverfront Park just south of Becks office, Ulele Springs are flowing at a rate of 1200 gallons per hour. The Springs had been named for a Seminole Indian princess. The restaurant of the same name will feature Native American dishes. The interiors frankly look like an architects office, and with its prime location anchoring the new park, it will be one more reason we will not need our visas to go to South Tampa for fine dining. The park is split into three ecological habitats, The fresh water springs is one, and it spills into a new man made lagoon, which becomes the second habitat, the estuary. Finally the Riverfront edge is the third habitat. I stood behind one of the many dilberts - looks like a long steel spade, which we used to dig the holes. It was an assembly line effort- hole digger created hole, plant stuffer puts the sprigs into the hole, and the dirt tampers came behind making sure the roots were well covered. My team did one fourth the estuary, or about 500 plants, which we completed in 2 hours. It was like a sauna, even at 8:30 am, and I was drenched by 11 am. So as to not scare women and young children, I thankfully kept my shirt on. I thought it was being coordinated by a Landscape Architect, but lo and behold, Ecological Scientists lead the efforts. Former Chapter President Vivian Salaga and I were the only architects there. Most of the volunteers were Tampa Heights residents. Thanks Susan R. KlausSmith for letting us know about it.
