um... so... I have actually read the catcher in the rye now, and learned all of the symbolism and i get the book... but I cant help but think that Holden is actually in jail at the end because he killed Phoebe. this is the most embarrassing post but look at all this dang evidence: 1. The carousel could actually be symbolizing heaven, Phoebe goes around and around forever, never changing (because she is DEAD) 2. Allies death was the catalyst for Holdens love for children, not the actual cause, but it made him really appreciate them more. Yeah, this sounds like just a you dont appreciate it until its gone kinda thing, but idk man. The combination of him loving youth and immaturity and kids, and then him hating his current life as an older person just strikes something in me and makes me think of a typical murderer. Anyways, why was it DEATH that made him realize how beautiful innocence was? 3. At the end, he mentions a psychoanalyst guy. Yeah, they are in mental institutions, but also involved in most criminal investigations. 4. Holden never got closure, and it is mentioned a few times that Holden has violent breakdowns, making it painfully obvious that he is traumatized. When you experience trauma, you get mad, and plain offended that the world would treat you like that, why you? you havent done anything, why didnt it happen to someone else, etc. so maybe holden wanted revenge on the world, despite his love for phoebe. 5. Its kind of like a zombie thing, if someone became infected, youd kill them. Holden has a very angry view towards a lot of people. Phonies in specific, although he will find any reason to consider someone a phony. I think that Holden is angry at the world, sees these people as a plague, and wants to get rid of them. You never know, because in the stream of consciousness format, Holden could just be lying, or rationalizing his possibly sociopathic behaviour. 6::::: Yes I understand this book completely, and I accept the real meaning, but as I was reading I just kept getting more and more sketched out by Holden, and the carousel part just made in lock into my mind. this is just like an AU I guess idk but anyways I really liked the book and for the others that did, Im not trying to offend you. pls dont get mad. Also, Id like to add that I spent 30 minutes typing this rather than typing my essay on TCITR.
