usborderarrest/ It used to be that border officials would arrest a person for bringing marijuana into the country but then refer the matter to local officials for prosecution. Now that state prosecutors are unable to handle such cases, it is solely left up to the federal authorities to prosecute. Since the federal authorities have not been taking the cases, border officials have been simply seizing the drug and denying the Canadians entry into the U.S. In some instance a small fine is levied.
