Since big pharma seduced psychiatrists with atypicals, Haloperidol has largely been prescribed in long term institutions, prisons and other settings where significantly higher doses are used in populations that tend to be chronically and severely ill-thus more likely to have decreased brain volume. Few antipsychotics treat positive symptoms or acute agitation as well as Haloperidol does. The postulated neuroprotective role of atypicals is yet to be proven; their potential to be "blockbusters" is legend. It is time not to "retire this aging neuroleptic" but the profligate sons of "evidence based" facism and big pharma.
