via Silvana Pellegrini Adam TAKE THE PLEDGE THAT YOU´RE VOTING FOR ANIMAL WELFARE IN THE EU-ELECTION 2014 - TAKE THE PLEDGE HERE: voteforanimals.eu/ During a debate with key MEPs and interested stakeholders at the European Parliament hosted by David Martin MEP Eurogroup launched its campaign to get animal welfare front and centre in the coming European Elections. At the debate it launched a Manifesto which sets out demands for the next term of the Parliament that Eurogroup for Animals hopes all the political groups will adopt . Eurogroup is also working through its 40 member organisations and their 10 million supporters to get candidates to adopt the Manifesto nationally as well. Eurogroup presented a pledge with seven key demands that it is urging all returning MEPs and new candidates to sign to show their support for animals. And to confirm that they recognise the concerns of Europe’s citizens. The Pledge identifies the key policy areas where Eurogroup for Animals expects to see change during the term of the next Parliament. It includes live animal transport, animal testing, the exotic pet trade, companion animal breeding, international trade, an overarching animal welfare framework law and an increased recognition and awareness that animals are sentient beings. To coincide with the debate a new website was launched that brings together all the information about the elections and the issues at stake. It can be found at voteforanimals.eu. This will be the primary focus for animal welfare related resources. As we get closer to the election this will help citizens select the candidates that are most likely to make a difference for animal welfare. “Today we are celebrating the work the current European Parliament has done on improving animal welfare and highlighting where work still needs to be done. We believe that by motivating European citizens to make a stand for animals we can increase voter turnout and give animals the voice they deserve,” commented Reineke Hameleers, Director at Eurogroup for Animals.
