(warning... gear head post) Worked on daughters new car last evening, I think it is a 04 Pontiac Aztec. The problem is overheating even on very cold days and no heat. I told her pick up a thermostat and I would put it in. Thermostat was a pain to put in but I found someone had gutted the existing stat (noting in the middle) and that was a bad sign... so I suspected someone had eliminated the stat due to another problem like a blown head gasket.. but there were no bubbles in the coolant. Another symptom was very low coolant level when I pulled the thermostat but the reservoir was full. So, after I finished the thermostat install I decided to blow through the re-fill hose. (The hose that extends from the tank to the radiator cap neck) to see if it was clear... nope, blocked tight. The hose was kinked next to the radiator fill neck. Car now has heat and is keeping cool. The moral of this story is many problems are not expensive to repair but difficult to find, a misdiagnosis can cost allot of money, but the consumer would never know. Some hack went through a lot of trouble modifying the thermostat to fix a simple problem.
