was there when Chris Katongo said the Zambia national football - TopicsExpress

was there when Chris Katongo said the Zambia national football team needs him and players like Joseph Musonda, Rainford Kalaba and others who are experienced. At no time did he refuse to recognise Evans Kangwas contribution in yesterdays game. Katongo himself provided the assist for Kangwas second goal. Chris was responding to a question put across to him by a Sunfm journalist who wanted to know when senior players would pave way for younger players at the national team because fans had been demanding for that for a long time. I find some of the comments a little bit harsh on Chris because he was right to say younger players need to win places at the national team on merit. If a younger player is not as good as any of the senior players should he play for the national team when the senior players still have in them what it takes to play for a few more years? What Chris actually meant was that if the younger players are not anywhere near as good as the senior and experienced players, they have to work harder in order to wear our national colours. For clarifications sake and for those who might not be aware, Evans Kangwa was a member of the chipolopolo squad that won the 2012 Afcon. He is not what you would call a newbie in the national team set up and he is not a threat to other players who play in his position. So it is wrong for anyone to think senior players are threatened by Kangwas brilliant performance against Uganda - they already know what he is capable of. Coach Beaumelle said at the same press conference that he needs to blend experience and youth emphasising that experience was more important.
