weekly message Bonjour, Good morning Tough to answer questions from my grandkids have been things like why is the sky blue ? Why is the grass green ? How can Santa make it to all those homes in one night ? A new question has now arisen, how is it, that the May 24 long weekend is held on May 17th ???? Just giving you things to ponder over your morning coffee. I don’t know about your yard, but between the rain and the spring fertilizer my lawn is crying out for a cut. Not say’n it’s chilly or anything but this might be the first time I have ever had to cut the grass with a Toque and mitts on ! Before you fire up your stove this morning to cook breakfast, consider this. Our Penetang Legion is holding a GIANT GARAGE SALE AND PANCAKE BREAKFAST today from 9 am until 1 pm. Breakfast is $5.00 per person. Be sure to pop by to fill your tummy and to discover some garage sale treasures! PSS ACTIVITY Communication efforts continue. A request for a delegation with the Trustee’s to bring to the light of day a number of process related matters and concerns was submitted. However the request was denied, due to, go figure, a board policy !! . I suspect that the purpose of the Board Policy is to prevent parties from circumventing the ARC process. That was not the intent of the proposed delegation. The ARC process is now concluded and notwithstanding serious concerns about flaws in the process, we participated in the ARC following the rules and restrictions imposed upon us by Board staff. However, staff are now recommending that the Board disregard the very ARC process they imposed upon our communities in favour of the staff position. The situation now sees Board Staff advocating that the Trustees disregard the ARC recommendation. The public should be provided the opportunity to respond to the Board position and to any board submission(s) to the Trustees. This is especially important given the concept of a new school being built and the funding pursuit of such an undertaking was never presented to the ARC committee to debate, investigate or deliberate upon. THE REMOVAL OF OPTHAMOLGY SERVICES - MEETING WITH THE LOCAL HEALTH INTEGRATION NETWORK (LHIN) Midland’s Mayor McKay along with the Midland Seniors council have spearheaded a seniors healthcare input session (see attached) for May 29th to discuss the LHIN’s attempt to remove Ophthalmology services from our area and to discuss where health care should head in the area. The meetings prime recipient to hear the voices of the seniors within our four local communities was to be the LHIN. Despite the LHIN’s desire to “hear” the voices of our senior’s community the LHIN has had to decline attending the meeting due to a Ministry directive to stand down during the provincial election. This poses two problems for the meeting (1) the LHIN will not be in attendance to hear the voices of our seniors and (2) the LHIN was to provide the lunch for the anticipated 250 seniors that would be attending the meeting and will not be doing so. This leaves the meeting with a $2,500 financial shortfall to cover the lunch bill. While delaying the meeting till just post the election would allow the LHIN to come back in to play attendance wise and solved the financial lunch crunch, Mayor McKay, as the meetings host, weighed the pro’s and con’s of moving the meeting date and has decided to proceed with the meeting on May 29th so please do mark your calendars. I should share that I am attempting to find a way to see if the LHIN can attend the meeting in a “listening only” role Stay tuned. THINGS TO TAKE NOTE OF Boating Safety -- please note that the good folks of the Ontario Provincial Police are warning boaters that although the ice may be gone from area lakes, extreme caution must be used when returning your boat to the water. With water temperatures still being very cold, a personal floatation device (PFD) or a floatation suit should be worn at all times. Hypothermia can and will set in very quickly should you fall into the water and at least with a PFD or floatation suit you may have a chance in surviving such an incident. Boaters are also reminded that many area lakes may still have some floating ice or objects such as logs or other debris that may cause damage to your vessel. Spring is in the air and our Penetanguishene Horticultural Society are holding their annual plant sale on Saturday May 24 at the Penetang Curling Club from 8:00 am to noon.
