weekly message Good morning, Bonjour A rainy start to the day, but that has some advantages. This summer’s weather seems to be perfect for growing as all I see as I travel about town is green grass, lush flower gardens, bursting vegetable gardens and a canopy of green leaves surrounding yards. It is rather nice. Folks have been asking for an update on our Sewage Treatment Plant. I can share that the latest construction schedule provided by the contractor will see the project completed by the end of November. To date, 82% of the contract items have been substantially completed. There are three main components to the project -- biosolids, headworks and UV. Construction on the biosolids building is approximately 85% completed with the majority of the equipment in place and building envelope completed. The contractor is currently working on the Waste Activated Sludge Tank, natural gas piping and is awaiting materials for the completion of the roof system. The majority of the equipment and mechanical systems are in place within the UV building. The remaining mechanical plumbing is being completed within the building including the installation of the odour control equipment. The contractor has completed the majority of the masonry work for the Headworks building and the doors and hardware for building have also been installed. The Lift Station and Equalization Storage tank are also being prepared for their respective leakage tests. I should share that despite the lateness in getting the project completed the project will come in under what was budgeted and that penalty clauses related to missed completion dates are being implemented. The month of July is the Municipal version of a summer recess and we remain in a summer slowdown mode but there are a few meetings occurring. The bulk of the meetings occur on Tuesday as Council meets for a full day of section meetings. Discussion topics for Tuesday include the possibility of applying for a $60,000 grant for the Bike Lanes on Fuller Avenue and a follow up discussion on the bike lanes themselves, we will discuss delegations for meetings in August with various Ministers, receive an update on portions of Rotary Park being Champlain Themed, we will discuss our thoughts on Health Care including the closing of PGH, we will discuss zoning for medicinal marijuana and we will get an update on our Transit Study. Beyond the Tuesday activities I have a several meetings with citizens on a variety of different topics, I connect with the Mayors Coalition for Affordable Policing to discuss our discussion points in preparation for a meeting with the New Ministry of Corrections Minister and I Chair a 2015 Champlain Commemorations committee. Other items this week include the unveiling of our new playground at JT Payette park (Edward Street) . The unveiling will also include the re-dedication of the playground to the family of Constable Tom Coffin. The unveiling occurs on Wednesday at 3 p.m. at the park. Please join us for the re-dedication ceremony I will also spend some of my Saturday morning at a Breakfast Bike-in which is a fund raising effort in support of the Fuller Avenue Bike lanes. The Friends of the Fuller Avenue Bike lanes are intent on raising $10,000 in support of the project. The breakfast runs from 7 a.m. till 10 a.m. at the corner of Fuller Avenue and Robert Street on The Industrial Filter property. Also on Saturday, Rotary Park will be alive with Water and Wheels, join us at the park and enjoy water stunt ski shows, check out over 50 antique cars, tap your toes to 50’s and 60’s music and check out the tasty snacks from a variety of food vendors. the day runs from 10 till 4.
