well, Im a little sad, but also feel some happiness that a lesson was learned...even if it was a short time...my friend lives in Colorado, they have been thinking of buying a dog, but then decided on adopting a senior dog....they have twin grandchildren, who are 7, and the past few weeks have been learning about dogs, going to shelters, and finally last Tuesday found their dog Festus....Festus used to belong to an older gentleman who loved to watch the show Gunsmoke, so Festus was named for one of the characters. Festus was 12 years old. Festus adjusted to his new home from the minutes he got there, he loved his new backyard, he loved to walk with the grandchildren, and would sleep between them on the floor while they watched TV...his favorite snack was bacon. Well, yesterday the twins came and got their grandmother and said that Festus did not wake up from his nap....my friend called her husband, he came home from work, she called their VET who sent his nurse over to their house....the nurse told the twins that she thought that Festus just died from a happy heart....that he found somewhere to live, and he got to spend his last days on earth loved by people in a home instead of at the shelter...he got to walk in the yard, eat his favorite bacon snacks, and watch his TV shows like he used to with his old owner...the nurse told the children that she had never seen such a happy dog, that he died of a happy happy heart. The kids were sad at first, but my friend said they buried Festus in the back yard, my friends husband helped the twins make a cross and they painted his name on it...they had a small little funeral and one of the twins said a prayer. My friend told me just in the few days they had Festus that their grandchildren have asked so many questions about death, love, being old and dying....and the twins decided that all old people and dogs should know they are loved when they get old and are dying..Festus taught them all a lot in just the few days he was there....so next week they are going to go back to the shelter and start their look again....for another senior dog to bring home...to show them that they are loved....a happy heart....happy happy happy
