what do you think about this app? SMART PHONE DRIVERS’ LICENSES AND CITIZEN AUXILIARY DISCUSSED AT COFFEE MEETING Carrying your driver’s license on your smartphone? There may soon be an app for that. At his latest January constituent coffee meeting, State Rep. Steve Smyk, R-Milton-Lewes, said lawmakers will likely be asking the Division of Motor Vehicles to research allowing motorists to carry digital drivers’ licenses on their smartphones. At least one state is already planning to experiment with the technology this year. “My concern would be the vulnerability of such a license to manipulation,” Rep. Smyk told those gathered for the meeting at Surf Bagel near Lewes. “If the DMV studies this idea, I want to make sure they thoroughly investigate its security.” On another topic, Rep. Smyk said he had some concerns regarding the state’s preparedness to respond to a statewide emergency, noting a major occurrence could strain the capabilities of the Delaware National Guard and police agencies. He said these agencies could benefit from the creation of a citizen auxiliary unit. Trained and tasked to perform low-level functions, such citizen volunteers could allow limited Guard and law enforcement personnel to concentrate on critical issues. Other topics discussed at the meeting ranged from the reappearance of the Overbrook Town Center shopping center proposal to the future of the closed Cape Henlopen Fishing Pier. The Coffee with Steve meetings give the residents of the 20th District a regular opportunity to meet with their state representative, ask questions, and hear about the latest developments in state government. The gatherings are held the second Tuesday of each month, from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m., at the Surf Bagel Restaurant near Five Points. The coffee and the conversation are free.
