what happens if I place an electron in the path of an electromagnetic wave ? (a classical picture) I think the electron will first oscillate with the electric fields of the wave and when it gains some velocity oscillating magnetic fields will act on the electron. I saw some applets of simple plane electromagnetic wave so I have little idea about it, but what really happens when an electromagnetic wave (not nessesarily a plane wave) passes through an electron at rest (at first and with respect to me). The resultant motion looks complicated at first, but when I consider a photon picture and something like Compton effect, then should motion be along the path of wave? Now I think the situation is much more complicated than I thought. So I did the calculation(for a plane polarized wave) and found the force is along the direction of wave and then I found that still the direction of motion is not nessesarily should be in the direction of force.
