when studying representational painting in my undergraduate education, i looked to R.B. Kitaj closely for several years. he made my favorite pastel drawings after Degas. pastels. simultaneously drawing and color, more so than any linear form in painting. looking back now, i was struck with this picture, since part of my interest is in the apparent vertical division between east | west and the horizontal division on continental forms, e.g. relations between Thailand - China seem more horizontal.
