when teaching your dog or pup to do a recall, start off with the - TopicsExpress

when teaching your dog or pup to do a recall, start off with the dog on a normal lead, so if the dog ignores your first recall, you can enforce it by encouraging him back using the lead, but only give that command once and make it happen. once you have it on a lead and have practiced it in every room of your house and garden, then is the time to get a long line and do the same with the long line in your garden and in the park. Never let your dog off lead until you have a reliable recall. if your dog ignores your first recall, you go back to basics and set yourself and your dog up to win. If using a long line for recall, never ever attach it to a headcollar, it goes on the harness or on a flat collar. I prefer not to use a retractable lead, for many reasons, but also if you have a long line, once the dog is recalling nicely, then you can drop the long line and let the dog roam a little bit and work on your recall again, still making sure you can reach that long line if he ignores you, with a retractable lead you cannot do that as the handle will clang along behind the dog and may spook the dog. Think also about introducing your dog to a whistle for recall regardless of breed. A whistle is consistent and will carry further than your voice.
