whidbeynewstimes/opinion/letters/278446311.html Scott Smith, Shame on you for attempting to stir up frenzy based on your tunnel vision. NAS Whidbey is NOT vital to Whidbey Island. There are no benefits from destruction of the ecosystem, pollution from Growlers, noise from the super highway directly above our homes at 100 – 140 dB. Sprawl for housing taking our open spaces with clear cutting of trees diminishing habitat for wildlife is of no benefit. Housing creating a demand for more water services, social, fire and law enforcement services is of no benefit. In 1991 NAS Whidbey should have been deactivated. With transition to the public domain citizens could now enjoy a welcome peace and quiet in our skies. Fresh air to breathe with no jet fuel pollution. Part of the facilities at the base would have been designated for use as low-income housing. This does not mean bums but people who for some reason beyond their control lack the funds for safe decent housing with dignity. Clean industry such as film production; there have been movies filmed in our unique area. A marine research facility or any other educational venue could now be active. There would also be provisions for recreation the possibilities are only limited by the vision of the community. Due to shady underhanded efforts to keep NASWI active citizens have lost diversification of enterprise and opportunities for well paying jobs in clean industry. We are left with constant unrelenting annoyance of loud earsplitting U. S. Navy Growler noise. Why does the U. S. Navy ignore safety hazards flying Growlers with pilots in training over our homes? The U. S. Navy is a terrible neighbor with no concern for our safety.
