workout tip: calves You have two different muscles in your calf. The gastrocnemius and the soleus. They both respond differently to different stimuli. The gastrocnemius is the main muscle you see and gives you the lumpy butt shape. It responds best to standing calf raises with high weight and explosive movements. Focus on sprints, box jumps and high weight low reps. The soleus is the muscle underneath and helps give your calf size. Whereas the gastrocnemius attaches to the femur the soleus does not. This means that only the soleus is activated when the leg is bent. It responds best to slow high volume stimuli. Seated calf raises and stair climbing or hiking. Lower weight higher reps
