worshippers call this energy using the names of Sita, Radha, Laxmi, Durga, Saraswati etc. With upward flow or wakening of this energy, man attains the state of Goodhood from humanhood, of Shivahood from creaturehood and in other words, of liberation from bondage. The cause of states of conflict such as birth and death, gain and loss, happiness and sorrow etc are the result of this energy lying dormant and moving downward. The energy awakened through energy pass should never be underestimated. This spiritual energy is both conscious and knowing. It is true that Guru does not bring any energy from outside and introduce it into the disciples body; rather this divine energy already exists in the disciple and it is not just active in evolutionary activity being dormant. When it is awakened as a result of gurukripa and starts to move guided by gurukripa, the vital energy or prana begins to get elevated. As sun light is needed to see the sun; and in the same way, self knowledge is possible only with the activation of spiritual energy. That is why it is necessary to be persistent in sadhana (spiritual practice) by showing equal trust and devotion to kundalini energy as much as it is shown to Guru or God. 9. Penance (tapa) The initiation or Guru dikshya is followed by penance or tapa. There are various types of tapas based on different views and principles. However, the sadhaka of mahayog need not entangle himself in this debate. For him, tapa means to remain engaged in the progressive development of the divine energy activated and conducted in him by Guru, in trust and with niskam bhava, through the practice of guru-given sadhana. Guru extends his supportive instructions from time to time to the initiate, all along the path. In this way, if tapa continuous with niskam bhava, this tapa which starts from initiation goes on to purify the mind or antahkaran and after the meeting with the istadeva, leads towards wisdom or enlightenment. There is no need to renounce ones family and home for tapa. In the ancient times, rishis were generally householders. If renouncing the family becomes a matter of higher love or shreya, the energy of gurukripa itself will pave the way for the sadhaka. 10. Surrender in tapa The path of mahayog is basically the path of surrender. During sadhana, the body, the mind and the intellect have to be surrendered to the energy. Surrender means doing everything as if it is Gods work and being indifferent to social prestige, respect and titles. The words God and energy are being used here for the sake of only formality or convenience. In fact, both of these should be understood as one and the same. Surrender to sadhana brings not only spiritual progress but also progress in day to day efficiency and skill in life. Practical surrender to sadhana also brings about spiritual progress and the sadhaka must always remember that power bestowed by God is for doing Gods work according to Gods command. 11. Yoga or Union It is useless to get entangled with most of the doubts related to the definitions and meanings of yoga. Some think the state of trance (samadhi) is yoga, some renunciation of sensuality, some restraint over prana, some efficiency in work and others union of a living being or jeeva with God. But when the sadhaka of mahayoga persists relentlessly in sadhana with no expectations (niskam bhava) at all, all the above mentioned definitions of yoga come about by themselves in him; and multi-dimensional progress starts taking place. 12. Is tapa Essential ?
