With our superb guide we can feel the spirit of this place, from walking the shingled beach of ANZAC Cove to hearing the amazing stories of loss and compassion that abound. After lunch we take an afternoon tour of the battlefields, including the haunting Lone Pine Australian Memorial before viewing the Nek and Chunuk-Bair New Zealand Memorial and Saim Mutlu War Museum. That night we continue on to Canakkale. We then Cross the Kaz mountains and drive through the backroads to Kozak Plateau, stopping in a small village to enjoy lunch with tea or coffee and discover the interior of a Turkish house. We continue to the ancient Pergamon and visit the Acropolis. In the afternoon, we feel the silk and other fine fibres as we take in a cultural lecture about handwoven carpets, the most popular handicraft in Turkey. Late that afternoon we listen to stories of the ancient Aegean as we travel down the coast to Izmir for the evening. Two nights accommodation in Izmir. Dinner at the hotel. As we make our way down the ancient cobbled streets, touch the marble pillars and hear stories of this beautiful place, we are transported back 2000 years. Modern-day musicians play near the magnificent library and in the amphitheatre we can listen to the incredible acoustics as we take in an impromptu performance. Lunch is at a local restaurant in a hidden valley where chickens, geese and peacocks walk freely within the premises. We return to Izmir for the evening and enjoy dinner at our hotel. We have lunch in a typical mountain village where we visit and hear about the unique Locomotive Museum of Turkey displaying trains and rail cars from all over Europe. Later that day we drive on to Pamukkale, an area renowned for its cascading hot springs. Two nights accommodation in Pamukkale Dinner at the hotel. Meals Included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner Overnight at: Tripolis Hotel Room Category: Standard Room Day 7 Wed 21 May 2014 Pamukkale After breakfast at our lovely hotel we are ready for a day of leisure in a place that’s been famous for sensory enjoyment since ancient times. Not only are there hundreds of terraces of warm mineral springs, there are the baths once frequented by Egyptian queen Cleopatra, who reputedly took the waters for their powers of rejuvenation. Entrance to the hot springs is included in our tour, making this a day to remember. Lunch and dinner are provided at our hotel. Meals Included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner Overnight at: Tripolis Hotel Room Category: Standard Room Day 8 Thu 22 May 2014 Pamukkale to Oludeniz Following breakfast at our hotel we travel from Pamukkale to Aphrodisias to explore the ancient city dedicated to the goddess of love and home to a school of sculpture that was known throughout the ancient world. We can touch the sculptural reliefs still adorning many of the buildings as we explore its many Greco-Roman remains including a stadium, which once sat 30,000 people and the Temple of Aphrodite, which was later converted into a Christian basilica. We enjoy a provincial lunch in a typical countryside restaurant before continuing on to Dalyan for a boat trip within the laguna where we can admire and listen to stories of the rock carved tombs dating back to the Roman era. There’s also time to stop for a mud bath at the thermal healing centre. We then drive through to Fethiye, for two nights in Oludeniz. Dinner at the hotel. Meals Included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner Overnight at: Club Belcekiz Room Category: Standard Room Day 9 Sun 23 May 2014 Oludeniz After breakfast at our hotel we accompany our guide as we discover Telmessos, the old Fethiye before continuing to Kayakoy, the old Greek village of Karmylassos abandoned in 1923. After lunch drive to Saklikent, the longest and most impressive gorge in Turkey (14 kms) where we will stop for a short walk and to enjoy tales of the Turkish countryside. Dinner at the hotel Meals Included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner Overnight at: Club Belcekiz Room Category: Standard Room Day 10 Sat 24 May 2014 Oludeniz to Antalya After breakfast at our hotel, we have time to stop at Patara beach for a swim (weather permitting) and continue to Demre. We visit the superb St. Nicholas basilica and enjoy a boat trip to Symena to discover the Roman city, sunken after an earthquake in ancient times. Lunch is included before we drive to Antalya. Two nights accommodation in Antalya. Dinner at the hotel Meals Included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner Overnight at: Khan Best Western Room Category: Standard Room Day 11 Sun 25 May 2014 Antalya After breakfast we visit the Archaeological Museum and the Roman harbour. Lunch is included then the remainder of the day is at leisure. We have an early dinner at the hotel, then depending on performances, we will take in a concert at the magnificent theatre of Aspendos. Meals Included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner Overnight at: Khan Best Western Hotel Room Category: Standard Room Day 12 Mon 26 May 2014 Antalya to Side This morning after breakfast we travel from Antalya to Aspendos, which has one of the best-preserved ancient theatres in the world. Its acoustics are so acute that a coin dropped on stage can be heard in the last row – and this is in an auditorium that can seat 7000 people! Lunch is beside magnificent Manavgat, the largest waterfall in Turkey, before we continue to Side. One nights accommodation in Side. Dinner at the hotel.
