wow what a turnout tonight....thank you all! I dont know about you, but my mind is on overloaded! Basically here is what is going to occur: first, MARCs (Montour Area recreation Commission) board of directors must approve the sending of a letter of intent to PPL Corporation expressing MARCs desire to coordinate programming at the preserve. Secondly, Assuming PPL is willing to consider the request, MARC must be able to meet and willing to meet the obligations set forth by PPL (insurance, safety concerns, event scheduling etc). Thirdly, if the first 2 conditions are met, MARC must secure enough funds from Community Donations, grants, local foundations and other sources to cover the costs of running the preserve. If any of you have suggestions on groups that MARC could partner with to produce educational programming at minimal cost, contact the MARC or Montour County Commissioners. Some suggestions discussed at the meeting include: CSIU, BU, PA Master Naturalist, partnering with a conservancy, partnering with area businesses to help fund programs. I cannot help but think how can a company that hasnt even officially formed yet, already begin to control the vital educational programs and overall preserve grounds. Basically to summarize...PPL knows the Preserve is important, but it is up to the community to decide what role they will take to preserve this wonderful place. Will there be enough volunteers to lead educational programs, will there be enough volunteers to maintain the grounds itself. As a community member stated, the educational programs and overall maintenance was all done by 8 people. Granted they are paid, at least through12/31/14, but 8 people. Imagine what the 5515 of us could do by just volunteering our time and skills to keep the Montour Preserve what it is for future generations.
