xuvaabeli THE SAHARA Facts :The sahara s maximum length east to west is ca. 3700 miles . north to south it extended nearly 1250 miles . *Area : With an area of over 3.5 million squear miles . it covers nearly one third of the African continent . *Saharan cotntries : Countries within the sahara include MOROCCO ,ALGERIA ,LIBYA ,TUNISIA ,EGYPT ,WEST SAHARA ,MAURITANIA ,MALI ,NIGER ,CHAD ,nd the SUDAN .. *Etymology :The name of Sahara comes from the Arobic word SAHRA. which is translation of the Tuaregtenere (=desert ,sand ) .The Romans called it TERRA DESERTA (emty abandoned land ). In the middle ages it was known simply as the Great desert. The name Sahara come into general use only in the 19th century .Arabs,rather poetically ,call it the "waterless sea "(bahr bela ma ).
