... you are to name him Jesus... Mt 1:21 OUR GOSPEL READING FOR TODAY, MARCH 19, SOLEMNITY OF SAINT JOSEPH, SPOUSE OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY, 2014; Mt 1:16, 18-21, 24 Jacob was the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary. Of her was born Jesus who is called the Christ. Now this is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about. When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found with child through the Holy Spirit. Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man, yet unwilling to expose her to shame, decided to divorce her quietly. Such was his intention when, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took his wife into his home. SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT: 1. YOU ARE TO NAME HIM, JESUS! This was a very important function given by God to Joseph, the most important role of Joseph in participating in God´s divine plan of salvation. Bigyan mo ng pangalan ang nasa sinapupunan ni Maria! Culturally, it is the father of the family who gives the name to the child. 2. Joseph knows it is not his biological child in Mary´s womb but IN UTMOST OBEDIENCE TO GOD, he accepted God´s commandment and took Mary and her child into his home. Had he not, Mary could have been stoned to death as what was the culture of the day for unmarried women becoming pregnant. Can you imagine what could have happened to Jesus? Joseph´s YES was so powerful, God´s plan of salvation through Jesus was done! 3. On this feast day of St. Joseph, take a moment to think about this MAN’S DEEP HUMILITY. Matthew’s Gospel tells us that Joseph was a “righteous man” (Matthew 1:19). He knew that Jesus was the Son of God: the shepherds, Wise Men, and Simeon in the Temple all confirmed it. But Joseph never tried to hold Jesus apart from the rest of humanity. 4. “Lord, give me the humble, righteous heart of St. Joseph. Help me to love and appreciate the people you have entrusted to me and to guide them wisely onto your path.” Mass Readings for the day: usccb.org/bible/readings/031914.cfm Magandang araw po!
