you cant plan your favorite birthday memory. it just happens and then its there the rest of your life as a personal happy space. it started innocently enough. i went to my aunts house for supper last night. baked salmon, greek salad and (what many of the participants felt this morning) too much wine. it was a low key family affair attended by my cousins silvi and erik, his partner hannah and her son malachi (i hope ive spelled that right) we ate drank and were merry. through the evening the conversation turned to my sadly departed uncle hank. i love my uncle hank. i wish i could trade my years with when i was a kid for extra years now. i still re read his long emails to me about the end of the world. he predicted it would start with russia invading the ukraine which is an eerie thing to read from a man whos been dead for 3 years now he was also a talented painter and since i just moved into a new condo with barren walls i enquired if any of his art was still kicking around. the short answer was no. all the paintings had been spoken for. there where, however, some unfinished paintings in the closet but nothing completed. thats when i had my idea. if they gave me one of the unfinished works then i could add my own touches to it and maybe be a way to steal some moments with my uncle and possibly get to know him just a little bit more. a small painting of flowers was chosen and away i went into the late night with my new found project from a man i miss very much. it was on the the sky train that i firmly hugged the painting almost as if it was uncles broad shoulders. i was teary eyed thinking of the big man and proud of my painting duet idea. and in what ive been assurred today as the ultimate tribute to the man. i quietly used it as cover to consume the beer id snuck onto the train. i listened to jerry reed and chet atkins play the guitar together on my ipod as i watched the digital clock on the public transport shift and as 11 59 turned to to 12 00. i turned 40
