you know, ive seen this video around the internet for a while now and ive never really commented on it. I think its from bODY_rEMIX/gOLDBERG_vARIATIONS by Marie Chouinard. Im not sure cause Ive never seen the whole thing. my feelings on it are pretty complex. The use of medical apparatus as props by extremely able bodied dancers directed by an able bodied choreographer does make me very uncomfortable, and should be commented on even though i understand 99% of ppl with disabilities in any media are represented by those without - and what they do in this ballet is not something that could be done by people requiring them. the other thing though is that this, while it could be written off as farcical or negative portrayal, is actually one of the few dance pieces ive ever seen that hits me really hard. for anyone who doesnt know, i spent a long time involuntarily in the hospital as a mental patient in Georgia and hospitals are one of the few things that can be extremely triggering for me. going to a hospital unprepared can send me quite anxious and manic and this dance seems to resonate with me on that level. its rare for something to hit on that experience. im not sure exactly what to say besides that but i am curious at peoples responses besides whoa so weird wtf did i just watch and so on. experimental, modern, ballet, etc dance is one of those expressive forms that i feel is often either instantly gotten or instantly written off as odd or a waste of time or something. i suppose like anything it hinges on your life experience.
