Avvicinarsi al relitto e vedere ancora in buono stato le torrette d’appoggio delle due mitragliere antiaeree fa aumentare i battiti del cuore, pare di sentire l’echeggiare dei motori e rivivere la disperazione degli ultimi momenti di vita di questi uomini. Emozionante scorgere la piccola cucina adiacente al locale coperto riservato all’equipaggio ed i sacchi di cemento pietrificati, non a caso l’ho soprannominato la “Pompei sommersa”. La Bettolina era utilizzata per il trasporto di materiale. Il giorno in cui fu affondata nel settembre del 1944, ricorrono proprio in questi giorni 70 anni, era appena salpata dal pontile della Fit carica di sacchi di cemento destinati ai lavori di manutenzione e costruzione di difese antisbarco per la sede ferroviaria di Deiva Marina quando fu colpita a prua da un motosilurante. Immediato e tragico l’affondamento in cui perse la vita l’intero equipaggio. I corpi dei marinai furono recuperati pochi giorni dopo nella Baia del Silenzio di Sestri Levante.
