youtu.be/8ImXB8WbH7QMerle Haggard spent three years in San Quentin Prison from 1957 through 1960. In March of 1971, Merle and his wife Bonnie Owens and his band The Strangers returned to San Quentin to record some tracks for a live gospel album entitled The Land Of Many Churches. Merv Griffin sent a film crew to document this event for a special episode of the Merv Griffin Show. The show never materialized and the footage was never edited. 41 years later the original films were found in the vaults housing the Merv Griffin archive. This rough edit is a sampling of that lost footage, with Merle giving his band and the crew a tour of the prison and a special recording of Amazing Grace with the San Quentin Chapel Choir. Merv Griffin had over 5000 guests appear on his show from 1963-1986. Footage from the Merv Griffin Show is available for licensing to all forms of media through Reelin In The Years Productions. reelinintheyears.
