My Red VW Bug sat for a year in front of my house while I fixed it and got it ready for me to be 16 and THUS ready for my FIRST SOLO DRIVE TO SCHOOL. No more schlepping through the frost or worse...the heat on my bike, or sometimes even on foot... if my complicated and sometimes cumbersome New wave outfits were too layered or sometimes even to fragile for riding a bike... it was the 80s what can I say...anyway, I planned everything for my first solo drive to school, from the crazy black and white checker-board interior of my car, to the flowing awesome all white Boy George-ish outfit, which consisted of course of a LONG white lab coat covered completely in safety pins, with white on white on white shirt, vest, and stretch pants underneath the coat, and.... I wore a giant hat...Obviously. And THIS was the song I knew I had to play so that I could achieve the highest level John-Hughesness one could possibly experience...I planned it all, executed it to perfection, and the results felt better than anything I had ever felt... No joke!! I actually had my first real awakening and said out loud... This is what success feels like. And then... yes .... I almost crashed into a truck, while putting on my eyeliner and making a left turn across traffic at the same time... and then I said out loud... And thats why I should drive to Angie Wolfgrams house and put my make up on there!! Anyway, this song always makes me happy! Because I remember how fun it was sometimes to be a kid.
