youtu.be/IZZYHx_IdCc - -> So some CPer here want to sail up Nort`Lake Superior O.K.. Let me take you on a scenic cruse. On board with Bob, Patsy and Stella dog sailing in their 26 foot Seaward sailboat built by Hake Boats. [Hake worked for Hutchins at one time. Note hull similarities] a few problems compounded into a call for help. But first ... The United States Power and Sailboat Squadron out of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin [ usps.org/localusps/door/ ] organized a boat club cruise to Bay Field and the Apostle Islands waters. A few days in, a stiff wind caused a weather delay for the sailboats. The powerboats continue on to the next destination, several hours away. [Harbors are few and far apart. Get an early start] The next day was a better sailing day and the sailboats left harbor, but still the wind had whipped up the cold waters into a bumpy chop on a grey crappy day, the main was reefed and the single cylinder diesel is running for additional steerage. The skipper spots a small tear in the main and turns back for harbor. Things were rough and things were being slung about and an unattended and an improperly stowed anchor line slipped overboard then wraps itself around the turning prop shaft, stops the engine, breaks loose the skeg and cracks open her bottom to the tune of a three to five gallon a minute leak. The skipper hand pumps and calls the Coast Guard. His arm from pumping is screaming and he is about dune in when almost immediately the Coasties arrive. The Coast Guard skipper steps off her boat and onto the disabled sailboat and she starts hand pumping with another auxiliary pump. For safety and room the crew are taken off Compromise which is made ready to be towed into a waiting Travel Lift. [incidentally also manufactured in Sturgeon Bay]. Such an adventure ... what was learned? Sea keeping when on water, especially rough water is paramount. If it can happen, it will happen. Be safe. The dingy astern of Compromise is one of those folding ones. Its kind of nice if you keep those pulpits free of junk, like hanging Bar-B-Ques. skip.
