youtu.be/_mVW8tgGY_w I know this might seem a bit trivial, but this piece of music was my first introduction to classical music. My Mum had a beautiful music/jewellery box, inlaid with Mother-of Pearl & Paua Shell, to me as a child, it was magical, made even more so by the music that played when I opened the lid! Oh the times I was told off for being caught in my parents bedroom, listening to it! (youd think Id have learned after the 1st time, but oh no! ..... not me! lol). Took me years to find out what it was called, & still remains my favourite piece to this day, mainly because of the memories it evokes. As I grew older, I found many pieces of classical music, (including Opera!), that I loved, & surprise, surprise, they co-existed, quite happily, with my love of Rock/Pop! I actually got to go a few concerts by the UO back in the 80s, courtesy of my best friends sister, who was really into her classics, my friend, needless to say, wasnt impressed, but , WOW! did I enjoy them! The musicians made playing look so effortless, & the atmosphere was incredible! One of the best things was, seeing the various type of people there, from the Fur Coat Brigade, as my friend unfairly dubbed them, the 80s fashion crowd, to me & others, sitting in our jeans & leather jackets!... To those who like to throw the E word about, attend a concert & take a good, long look around the audience! When I met my partner, who was heavily into film soundtracks or more accurately, film scores, I was introduced to another aspect of this music.( Anyone who watches films, either at the cinema or on tv, knows the music tells the story almost as much as the script or visuals). Max Steiner scored my all time favourite movie, & the incredible John Barry created a score (Dances With Wolves), which can (& does!) bring tears to my eyes................... I guess Ive rambled on a bit, lol, but, for me, the message is clear, ......... N.I. NEEDS the UO, & we lose it at our peril! ................ So you folk up on The Hill .......... please, please, dont let us down!
