youtu.be/gOlpcJhNyDI Ok here it is - the last one I promise and its the Duke. Duke Ellington, in my mind, is the bridge between the Dixieland style of King Oliver and Jelly Roll Morton, and Bebop - such as Thelonious Monk for example. And, if you listen to more by Dukey you can really hear a key influence on Monks unique and signature broken rhythmical style of playing. In this video you can see Ellingtons keen ability to entertain, his great sense of humour and fun which he picked up from the aforementioned New Orleans jazz tradition and also his savviness in marketing, his band - playing with toilet plungers for mutes - was a gimmick he employed despite considerable financial success. Later Ellington was to employ Ella Fitzgerald as his vocalist and here her career was launched; but many only see Ellington in this context and consider him no more than a springboard. He was of course no less than one of the definitive forefathers of jazz and his tight-nit arrangements set the table for the likes of smaller ensamble musicians such as Miles Davies, Thelonious Monk, Dave Brubeck and, of course, so many more. We need more musicians like Dukey.
