youtube/watch?v=MVt32qoyhi0 “Lucy” (ScarJo, MoFree) Summer 2014 Lucy has been kidnapped by the Yakuza and forcibly implanted with a drug that will give her access to 100% of her brain. This is why pretty blond girls shouldn’t travel to Asia without a bodyguard. Then again, how can you blame a girl when she is forcibly handcuffed to a briefcase and sent into the gangster’s den so helpless and alone? But what’s a few unbelievable circumstances in a summer movie amongst friends anyhow. The merit of the movie should be thumbnail measured by how amazing the adventure itself will be as this first human, Lucy, like the Australopithicus- get it?!, for the first time, touches their full potential. As Lucy gains brain power, she can learn all humn knowledge in seconds by downloading the internet directly while her cells are developing full interconnectivity and thus allowing full control of her own biology, control over matter around her and communication capacity with electronic frequencies and devices. What does all this power amount to? Nothing much except some ponderous reflections on human potential itself since the time we were apes. All that cell-dividing and passing down of information through the generations has gotten us where, exactly? Most of what we learn from this movie we learn from the lecture dictation of Professor Morgan Freeman in all his collegiate, dulcet tone glory. Heck it worked in Shawshank Redemption let’s not leave anything to chance here. Without his occasional plot recaps, the pieces of this movie would fly apart more readily than they do. The Director made it clear early on that the film lacked a rudder in the plot development as he inter cut scenes of wild animals in their natural habitats to underscore the voiceover dictation hypothesizing how mankind itself struggles in its habitat as well. A final thought: as Lucy gains full control of her mind she loses her small-brain feelings of human pleasure and pain and becoming in essence a supercomputer and so…wait, why do we care about her again?
