Native to pacific coastal area, Mexico and Central America, the tree was introduced to all parts of the tropical world. Height: 15-20 m Fruit: Edible. Sweet and sour. Wood: Hard but with much bending and distortion; used in light carpentry only. Bark: Contains as much as 35-40% tannins. Used in tanning industry. Highly astringent and hemostatic.
