I have loved this movie for years. And the letter, well, I believe the letter, like in the movie, always belonged to the woman he loved, than hated we thought, but, always, always, he loved her. He is old, yet on his deathbed he says to her: Must it be? And she writes Yes. He dies, then she reads the missing letter, and cries her heart out, over him, over his death, over the lost years, so many. Too many to count. Such a tragedy, a tragedy of love, a tragedy of life. Even some married, have not truly known love. How sad. To make your love conditional, a damn crime, likely a sin.
