You have the animal warmth of your families sitting right next to you but you are free to go roaming around ventured land inside your own mind. Shyness is about fear of social judgment. Solitude is a crucial ingredient often to creativity. Solitude matters. For some people it is the air that they breathe. In fact, we have known for centuries about the transcendental power of solitude. It’s only recently that we’ve strangely begun to forget it. If you look at the world’s major religions, you will find seekers, Moses, Jesus, Buddha, and Muhammad. Seekers are going out by themselves, alone to the wildness, where they then have profound epiphany and revelations and then bring back to the rest of the community. Much better for everybody to go out by themselves, generate their own ideas, free from the distortion of group dynamics, and then come together as a team to talk them through. Western societies and in particular the U.S. have always favored the men of action over the men of contemplation. In America’s early days, we lived in what historians call a culture of character, where we still at that point value people for their inner self and their moral rectitude. The feature role models like Abraham Lincoln who is praised for being modest and unassuming. I am going to leave you now with three causes of action for those who share the vision. 1. Stop the madness for constant group work. Work on your own. That’s where deep thought comes from in part. 2. Go to the wildness. Have your own revelations. Be like a Buddha. 3. Take a good look at what’s inside of your own suitcase, why you put it there. But introverts, you being you, you probably have the impulse to guard very carefully what’s inside your suitcase. That is okay. But occasionally I hope you open up your suitcases for other people to see. The world needs you, need the things you carry. So I wish you the best of all possible journeys and the courage to speak softly.
