Ça. Small employers (under 25 workers) will save on average $350 over the next two years with the 15% cut to EI contributions. This is not going to create any jobs. With EI eligibility now at record lows (36.6%), these cuts are designed to create more momentum for wider attacks on EI. It makes EI an ineffective program that is seen more as a tax burden than a worthwhile, functioning program that helps all workers in hard times. This is a common neoliberal strategy of privatization. Budget cuts and fomenting controversies creates a crisis of public confidence in the social programs quality and availability to all. This allows government and corporate think-tanks (who target the media) to introduce and promote pro-business strategy as a legitimate alternative to the public option. Proper funding, staffing and making social programs truly universal is never an option. We are seeing this strategy unfold at Canada Post, in healthcare, public education, and elsewhere.
