ÖZEL ATÖLYE ÇALIŞMASI [DIŞARIYA KAPALIDIR] (The workshop itself will be open to active participants only) Maragha and its Scholars: The Intellectual Culture of Medieval Maragha, ca. 1250-1550 Saturday, 7 - 8 December 2013 German Oriental Institute in Cihangir, Susam Sokak 16‐18 Panel 4: Astronomy at Maragha and Beyond II İhsan Fazlıoğlu The Impact of the Maragha Mathematical-Astronomical School on the Anatolian Scientific Environment and Ibn Sartāq (d. [after] 1329-29) The many debates about the Maragha mathematical-astronomical school notwithstanding, it can be considered an independent school. The most important proof of this is the scholars themselves who were once members of this school and went to different regions of the Islamic world where they, in turn, passed on this knowledge to future students. Noteworthy among these is particularly Anatolia, which had become an integral part of the Turkistan-Iran cultural zone during the Ilkhanid period. As a well known example, the Maragha mathematical-astronomical school can count Quṭb al-Dīn al-Shīrāzī (d. 710/1311) amoung its first generation members. A less well known name is that of Ibn Sartāq (d. [after] 728/1328-9), whom we have discovered in our studies and who will be discussed in this presentation. Shams al-Dīn Muḥammad ibn Sartāq ibn Chubān ibn Shīrkīr ibn Muḥammad ibn Sartāq al-Wararqīnī al Marāghī was a second or third generation student of the Maragha mathematical-astronomical school. He lived in Maragha and dedicated a mathematical book of his to Aṣīl al-Dīn b. Naṣīr al Dīn al-Ṭūsī, the third director of the Maragha Observatory. Later he moved to Anatolia and gave lessons in the Niẓāmiyya Madrasa in Nīksār/Toqat; especially the first Ottoman scholar (mudarris), Dāwud al-Qayṣarī (d. 1350), was one of his students. In this presentation, we will focus particularly on Ibn Sartāq’s life, his works and his educational activities; and generally on the impact of the Marahgha mathematical-astronomical school on the scientific environment in Anatolia and its last generation’s contrubitions to the scientific life in Anatolia.
