ÜMD: sub-category of: cool-shit-you-never-knew-existed-but-was-created-for-a-need-entirely-foreign-to-your-habits-and-nonetheless-even-though-you-will-likely-NEVER-use-it-for-ANYTHING-much-less-the-intended-for-which-it-was-designed-YOU-MUST-HAVE-IT. fishing-weights. never. my grandfathers were respectively busy being pushed down the stairs by their son (paternal) or pushed any and everywhere and in every which way by his wife (maternal). they both lived in the basement. not a lot of fishing was done. (i DID get a few glimpses of what an important fashion choice a clean homburg was from the maternal.) anyway, not a lot of fishing was done as far as i could see. and i havent yet really researched it yet either (after knowing about them for several years. which one may NOT if not given to scouring odd specialty stores or the sports sections of wal-mart or tarjay.). i dont really WANT to know the proper purpose. maybe weighing down the lure/casting end so there is more centrifugal force when casting. or maybe just once it lands somewhere so the lure sinks and bobs and whatnot, not just lays lamely on the surface? anyway: under the not-quite-quantum physics scale, its like a VERY useful tool in the rube-goldberg-sculpture-weight structure, like ive been mentioning about barbells and bags of water and such. tiny lead weights, variously shaped. sometimes with a built-in tiny attachment loop (take THAT, lena dunham, haha). i just got my first in a while. globes. spherical solids of lead that seems as though they should be accompanied by a miniature (of course he doesnt KNOW hes miniature, they never do) one-shoulder-bearing leopard-onesie strongman with a handlebar moustache. like goth xmas ornaments in lilliput. AGAIN. good thing i never pierced my ears. I CAN BARELY BELIEVE ive never seen anyone sporting them. theyd stretch the lobes gorgeously and bypass ENTIRELY the cheap metal earring problem. i mean A DOLLAR FORTY-SIX CENTS. matching pair. six ounces each. puts me in mind of what i wonder if they even MAKE anymore: drapery-weight cord. essentially a very very (well, not QUANTUM tiny) skinny fabric tube with lead weights distributed at intervals to be sewn in the hem of your drapes since certain fabric wont hang properly unless additional weight is employed. and the DISCERNING seamstress sews such into the hems of ANY longish-skirt for the way it slightly slows time. i MISS wandering amidst the notions in a good fabric store. so many great ideas made manifest. to be combined in innumerable ways. oh, and while were on the topic of sewing? for VERY rough jobs when one doesnt CARE that its lazy and fast and raw, haha: cynaoacrylate instead of basting. just a drop every six inches or so to be followed by actual stitchery later. it wont (no matter what they tell you) bear much weight or wear but it gives INSTANT gratification when improvising. and whatever happened to todd oldham anyway? THERES a name one used to hear all the time. and then? not so much.
